ChatGPT Verification Email Not Received? Causes and Fixes
You typed your address into ChatGPT's sign-up form, the page says "check your inbox", and nothing is there. It is a common sign-up problem, and the cause is rarely mysterious. OpenAI sends a 6-digit code by email; if that message is blocked, delayed or superseded, you are stuck on the first screen. This guide covers the real causes in the order worth checking, the fix for each, and what a rented real inbox can and cannot do.
How OpenAI's email verification works
When you sign up with an email address (rather than "Continue with Google" or Apple), OpenAI emails a 6-digit code with a subject along the lines of "Your ChatGPT code is 123456". You type that code into the sign-up page to activate the account. Two details matter for troubleshooting: the code is only valid for a short time, and asking for a new one replaces the old one. Behind the scenes OpenAI also scores the sign-up — IP address, device, network — and that score decides whether a code gets sent at all.
Cause 1: the email domain is blocked
If you used a 10-minute mail or any free temp-mail site, this is almost certainly the problem. The domains those sites use are collected in public blocklists, and OpenAI either rejects them at the email field or accepts the form and quietly never sends the code. A brand-new temp-mail domain may slip through for a few days before it is listed too.
Fix: use an address from a mainstream mailbox provider. Gmail and iCloud addresses are treated as ordinary consumer mailboxes. Cause 2: OpenAI is simply slow
OpenAI is one of the slowest senders we track. On rented inboxes at OTPGmail, the ChatGPT code takes about 3–4 minutes on average to arrive, where GitHub's code usually lands in about 30 seconds. Many people give up after a minute, assume the email failed and start clicking.
Fix: wait a full five minutes before you touch anything, and keep the sign-up tab open while you wait.
Cause 3: you pressed "Resend" and cancelled your own code
Each time you request a new code, the previous one can stop working. Press Resend three times and up to three emails may arrive minutes later, of which only the newest is valid. Typing the first code you see produces an "incorrect code" error, which looks like yet another failure.
Fix: resend once at most, then wait. When several codes arrive, use the most recent one.
Cause 4: a typo, a stray space or an aggressive filter
Small things break delivery too. A trailing space pasted after the address, a missing character, or a corporate mail filter that quarantines automated messages will all make the code "never arrive".
Fix: paste the address rather than typing it, and check for spaces. On your own mailbox, look in the junk and promotions folders and search for "ChatGPT code".
Cause 5: OpenAI never sent the email
Sometimes there is nothing to find because nothing was sent. If OpenAI's risk checks dislike the sign-up — a data-center or free-VPN IP address, a browser it has seen creating many accounts, several sign-ups from one network in a short time — it can stop the process silently at this step.
Fix:
- Sign up in a desktop browser, in a private window, rather than in the mobile app.
- Use a stable, ordinary connection. If you must use a VPN, stay on one server from start to finish; switching IP address midway invites extra checks.
- Create one account at a time. Bursts of sign-ups from the same IP address are the fastest route to being blocked.
- If it still fails, try a different network, such as mobile data instead of office Wi-Fi.
Using a real rented inbox for the verification step
If you would rather not use your personal address — for a test account, a separate work profile or a client project — a rented real inbox avoids the blocklist problem because it is a genuine @gmail.com or @icloud.com mailbox, not a throwaway domain. On OTPGmail it works like this:
- Open the rent page, pick ChatGPT as the service and choose Gmail or iCloud under "Inbox type". You are charged only when an address is actually issued.
- Paste the address into ChatGPT's sign-up form and set a password.
- Watch your order page. The code appears there on its own; you never log in to the mailbox.

When OpenAI still asks for a phone number
An honest note: email verification is not always the last gate. Most browser sign-ups need only an email, but OpenAI can still ask for a phone number — typically when you sign up in the mobile app, when the network looks risky, or when you use the OpenAI API platform rather than plain ChatGPT. No inbox, rented or otherwise, replaces that step, and OTPGmail provides inboxes only. If the phone screen appears, use your own number or stop there. After you are in: the first 24 hours
A rented inbox keeps receiving codes for free for 24 hours, and OpenAI often sends a new code when you log in on another device. So:
- Log in on every device you plan to use on day one.
- Save the password immediately. After the 24 hours the address no longer receives mail for you, so a password reset through it is impossible.
- For work that matters long term, an account on an address you own remains the safer choice.
