Hide My Email vs a Rented iCloud Inbox for Sign-Ups
Hide My Email, part of iCloud+, gives you random addresses that forward mail to your own inbox and stay yours until you switch them off. A rented iCloud inbox is a separate, real @icloud.com mailbox that receives one service's code for you on an order page, with nothing forwarded to you. Use Hide My Email for accounts you will keep, and a rental for a one-off verification.
This guide is for Apple users choosing how to sign up for a service without handing over their main address, and for anyone weighing Hide My Email against a temporary inbox. Apple's details below come from its own help pages and developer news, read in October 2026.
How Hide My Email works
According to Apple's support pages:
- It needs iCloud+ (or Apple One, which includes it), iOS 15, iPadOS 15 or macOS 12 or later, and two-factor authentication on your Apple Account.
- You create addresses in Settings, Safari, Mail or on iCloud.com. In supporting apps on iPhone, the keyboard offers a Hide My Email address when a form asks for an email. Apple says you can create as many addresses as you need.
- Mail is forwarded to your iCloud Mail or another address on your Apple Account. Every Hide My Email address forwards to the same destination, which you can change at any time.
- Replies stay private. When you answer from Mail, the site sees the random address, not your real one.
- You can switch an address off. Mail sent to a deactivated address is returned to the sender. You can reactivate it later; deleting an inactive address is permanent.
- The domain is @icloud.com. Addresses made with the Hide My Email option of Sign in with Apple use Apple's relay domain instead, @privaterelay.appleid.com. In August 2026 Apple said new Sign in with Apple addresses will move to private.icloud.com later this year, while iCloud+ Hide My Email stays on icloud.com.
How a rented iCloud inbox works
A rented inbox works the other way round. On the rent page you choose the service you are signing up for, set the inbox type to @icloud.com and press Rent now. You get a real @icloud.com address to paste into the sign-up form, and the code appears on your order page. There is no password, no forwarding and no reply button; you never sign in to the mailbox.
If the first code does not arrive within 25 minutes, the order cancels itself and 100% goes back to your balance, as the refund policy sets out. Extra codes arrive only when the service sends more than one, within limits shown on the rent page. iCloud inboxes are usually cheaper than Gmail, depending on the service, and their stock is shown live; when it runs out you can switch to @gmail.com. You need neither iCloud+ nor an Apple device. Renting an iCloud address shows the four steps, and the iCloud inbox overview covers prices, stock and the API.

Which one to use
- An account you will keep (a shop, a newsletter, an app you use every week): Hide My Email, or your own address. Password resets and security codes will keep reaching you for years.
- A one-off verification, a QA test account, or a separate address for a client project: a rented inbox. Nothing is left in your Apple Account afterwards.
- No iPhone, Mac or iCloud+ subscription: a rented inbox gives you an @icloud.com address without either.
- A site that offers “Sign in with Apple”: use Apple's own relay option there; there is nothing to rent.
- Creating an Apple Account itself: OTPGmail offers that service with Gmail inboxes only, because an @icloud.com address already belongs to an Apple Account.
If you are still torn between the two inbox types OTPGmail rents, Gmail or iCloud rental has a short decision guide.
Why some sites never deliver to these addresses
- Sign in with Apple relay addresses only accept registered senders. Apple's developer documentation says a developer must register the domains it sends from; mail from anyone else to a relay address bounces. If you copy a @privaterelay.appleid.com address into a different website, that site's codes will not arrive.
- A deactivated Hide My Email address returns mail to the sender, so a code sent to an address you switched off never reaches you.
- Forwarding goes to one place. If you changed the forwarding address, look for the code in that inbox, including its junk folder.
- A rented inbox refused by a site: cancel before a code arrives for a full refund, then rent the same service with @gmail.com.
When a Hide My Email or iCloud address gets no code at all, iCloud email not receiving verification codes walks through the checks in order.
What neither option promises
Neither is anonymous. Hide My Email hides your address from the website, not from Apple: the alias belongs to your Apple Account and the mail passes through it. A rented inbox is not linked to your Apple Account, but mail that reaches it is read automatically to extract the code, OTPGmail keeps order records, and the website still sees your device and network. Use either one within each platform's terms, and keep anything you must recover later on an address you control.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a limit on Hide My Email addresses?
Apple's help pages say you can create as many as you need and do not publish a number. All of them belong to your Apple Account, so deactivating the ones you no longer use keeps the list manageable.
Is there a Hide My Email generator without iCloud+?
No. Hide My Email addresses are created by Apple inside your Apple Account with an iCloud+ subscription. A website that claims to generate them for you is not using Apple's feature.
Why is Hide My Email not forwarding?
Usually the address was deactivated, the forwarding destination was changed, or the message landed in junk. If the destination is iCloud Mail and your iCloud storage is full, new mail cannot arrive there either.
Can I use Hide My Email to sign up in an app?
Yes, in apps that support it: on iPhone, tap the email field and choose Hide My Email above the keyboard. The app sees only the random address.
