Gmail Account Without a Phone Number: Real Options
Short answer: often yes, but not always, and not on your terms. When you create a Google account, the phone number step is sometimes optional and shows a Skip option. Other times Google requires a number, and there is no Skip. Google decides this with its own checks, and there is no legitimate way to switch them off.
This guide covers what you can do within Google's rules, why Google asks, and what to avoid. It also covers two practical alternatives. Rent an inbox when you only need a verification code. Buy a short-lived account when you need a Gmail login for a few hours. It is not a guide to getting past Google's checks.
How Google's sign-up handles the phone number
The sign-up is the same on a PC and on a phone. In a browser, open the Gmail sign-in page and choose Create account. On Android you can also add an account from the phone's settings. Then you enter your name and date of birth, choose a Gmail address and set a password.
What happens next depends on Google's checks:
- The number is optional. Google shows a screen to add a phone number, with a Skip option. You can skip it and finish the sign-up.
- The number is required. Google asks you to verify a phone number with a code before it creates the account. There is no Skip, and the sign-up cannot finish without that step.
Google may also offer to add a recovery email. That step can usually be skipped too, but it is worth filling in. Google can also ask for a phone number later, for example when it sees unusual activity on the account.
Why Google asks for a number
Google uses phone verification for three main reasons:
- To check that a real person is signing up. It slows down automated sign-ups.
- To give you a way back in. If you forget your password, or someone else gets in, a number on file helps you recover the account.
- To limit how many accounts one number can verify. If a number has been used too often, Google refuses it.
So the Skip button depends on Google's view of that sign-up. You cannot choose it.
What you can do within Google's rules
- If you see Skip, you may skip. Add a recovery email instead, so you can still get back in if you forget the password.
- If Google insists, use your own number. Afterwards, you can review how the number is used in your Google Account settings.
- For a team or a business, Google Workspace (a paid Google product) lets an admin create mailboxes on the organisation's own domain. The admin creates the accounts, so staff do not go through the personal sign-up flow. These addresses are not @gmail.com.
What to avoid: do not verify an account you plan to keep with a number that is not yours. That includes numbers from public "receive SMS online" sites. Other people can see those codes, the number can be reused, and you lose your way back into the account. It can also break Google's terms. OTPGmail handles email only. It does not rent phone numbers or receive SMS.
If you only need an address for a code, rent an inbox
Many people who search for "Gmail without phone number" do not need a Gmail account at all. They need an email address to receive a verification code when they sign up somewhere else. In that case, nothing has to be created.
Rent an inbox instead. You pick the service you are signing up for and choose @gmail.com or @icloud.com. Then you paste the real address you get into the sign-up form. The code appears on your order page. There is no password, and you never sign in to the inbox. If no code arrives within the waiting time (25 minutes at most), the order cancels itself with a 100% refund. Extra codes cost nothing within the order period when the service sends more than one.
Keep the limits in mind. A rented inbox only receives mail, you cannot send email from it, and it is not a long-term mailbox. Our guide to renting a Gmail for sign-ups without a phone number shows where this works and where it does not. The Gmail rental overview explains the service.
If you need a Gmail login for a short task, buy a short-lived account
Sometimes you do need to sign in to a Gmail account, for a QA test or a one-day project inbox. You may not want your own number on an account you will not keep. A short-lived account fits that case.
When you buy one on OTPGmail, the account already exists. You do not go through Google's sign-up, and you do not add your own number. Each account is a real @gmail.com account delivered within seconds to a few minutes with its email and password. Depending on the type and the batch, it may also include a recovery email and either a quick login link or login cookies. The fresh type comes with email and password only, and you sign in through the Gmail app.
Know the limits before you buy:
- Lifetime is short and depends on the type. Read each type's description on the buy page and use the account at once.
- The warranty covers only your first sign-in within 2 hours of purchase. If it fails, contact support with your order ID. You get another account or a refund to your balance, depending on stock.
- Captchas: Google is tightening captcha checks on short-lived accounts, and OTPGmail does not solve them. If your tool cannot handle a captcha, do not buy.
- Never use it as your main email. You do not control its recovery, and it will not last.
The buy Gmail accounts overview explains delivery and sign-in in detail.
Which option fits you
| You need | Best option | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A personal mailbox for months or years | Your own Google account, with your own number or recovery email | You keep control and can get back in |
| One verification code for a sign-up elsewhere | A rented inbox | Nothing to create, and a refund if no code arrives |
| A Gmail login for a few hours | A short-lived account | A real login, with no number of yours on it |
Whatever you choose, follow Google's terms and the terms of each site you sign up to. OTPGmail is for legitimate uses such as testing, QA and keeping projects separate, and it is not responsible for misuse. When you are ready, rent an inbox or open Buy short-lived Gmail.
Frequently asked questions
Can I create a Gmail account without a phone number in 2026?
Often, yes. If the phone screen shows a Skip option, you can skip it and finish. If Google requires a number for that sign-up, there is no Skip, and you need to verify a number to continue.
Why is there no Skip button on the phone number screen?
Because Google's checks decided that this sign-up needs phone verification. Google does not publish the exact reasons, and you cannot turn the check off. If you only need a code for another site, renting an inbox avoids the question.
Can I use an online SMS number to verify my Gmail?
It is a bad idea for any account you want to keep. Other people can see codes sent to public numbers, and the number may be reused. You also lose the ability to recover the account, and it can break Google's terms.
Does a bought short-lived account need my phone number?
No. The account already exists when you buy it, so you do not go through Google's sign-up. Google can still show checks such as a captcha when you sign in, and OTPGmail does not solve captchas.
Can I make a Gmail account on a PC without a phone number?
The sign-up on a PC works the same way as on a phone. Whether you see Skip depends on Google's checks for that sign-up, which you cannot control from either device.
