Instagram Confirmation Code Not Reaching Email: Fixes
Instagram's confirmation code usually arrives within a minute or two. If yours has not, the cause is almost always one of five things. It could be a typo in the address, a filter that moved the email, or a resend loop. It could also be a short-term limit, or a sign-up that Instagram chose not to finish. Work through them in the order below.
First, check which case you are in. If you are creating a new account, every fix below applies, including switching to another real inbox. If you are logging in to an existing account, Instagram sends codes only to the email or phone already on that account. Only access to that contact can help, so jump to the section on existing accounts.
Quick check: what you see and what to do
| What you see | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The "we sent a code" screen shows a wrong address | Typo | Go back, fix the address, request one new code |
| Nothing in the inbox after 2 to 3 minutes | Filtered or delayed | Check junk and the Promotions, Social and Updates tabs; search for "Instagram" |
| Several codes arrived, none is accepted | Resend loop | Use only the newest code |
| "Please wait a few minutes before you try again" | Too many attempts | Stop, wait, then try once |
| Nothing ever arrives, at any address | Instagram did not send it | See cause 5 below |
| "Email not verified" in your settings | Confirmation not finished | Confirm the email again from Accounts Center |
Cause 1: the address is wrong
One missing letter or a space after the address is enough. Instagram then sends the code somewhere else, or nowhere. Paste the address instead of typing it, and check the confirmation screen. If it is wrong, go back and change it before you ask for another code.
Cause 2: the email was filtered
Instagram's emails come from addresses that end in @mail.instagram.com. Mail filters sometimes move them:
- Gmail: check the Promotions, Social and Updates tabs, then the junk folder.
- Outlook: check Other and the Junk Email folder.
- Work or school email: the organisation's filter may hold automated mail. Ask the admin, or use a personal address.
Search the whole mailbox for "Instagram". If you find the email in junk, mark it as not junk so the next one lands in your inbox.
Cause 3: you pressed resend too many times
Each new request can replace the previous code. Press resend three times and three emails may arrive, but only the newest one works. Typing an older code gives an "incorrect code" error, which looks like another failure. Resend once at most, wait a few minutes, and use the most recent code.
Cause 4: Instagram is limiting your attempts
After many tries in a short time, Instagram may block new codes for a while. You may see a message asking you to wait. More attempts can make the wait longer. Stop for some time, then try once.
Cause 5: Instagram never sent the email
Sometimes there is nothing to find, because nothing was sent. Instagram runs checks on every sign-up. If something looks risky, it can stop at the code step without telling you. Simple things help:
- Update the Instagram app, or sign up in a normal browser instead.
- Turn off any VPN and use a stable connection. Trying once on mobile data instead of Wi-Fi can help too.
- Create one account at a time. Several sign-ups from one device in a short time look risky.
New sign-up: switch to a real Gmail or iCloud inbox
If your own address never gets Instagram's mail, for example because a work filter blocks it, use another real mailbox. A rented inbox works for this. It is a real @gmail.com or @icloud.com address, not a throwaway domain.
- On the rent page, pick Instagram and choose @gmail.com or @icloud.com. You are charged only when an address is issued.
- Paste the address into Instagram's sign-up.
- The code appears on your order page, usually within about 2 minutes. You never sign in to the inbox.
- If no code arrives within the waiting time (25 minutes at most), the order cancels itself with a 100% refund.
Over the last 30 days, 89% of the Instagram rentals on OTPGmail received a code. Prices and stock are on the Instagram inbox page. Our guide to renting a Gmail for Instagram verification covers the full sign-up. Remember that a rented inbox receives codes only during the order period. For an account you will keep, add your own phone number or permanent email right after sign-up. If you are setting up a brand or client profile, read Instagram second account: when it needs its own email.
Existing account: a rented inbox cannot help
If Instagram is sending a login or security code for an account you already have, it goes only to the email or phone on that account. A new inbox cannot receive it.
- On the login screen, use Forgot password? and choose the email or phone you still have.
- If you cannot reach either one, follow Instagram's in-app recovery steps for people who cannot access their email or phone.
- If you lost access to the email account itself, recover it with your email provider first.
- Ignore anyone who offers to "recover" your account for money.
For problems with other services, our verification code not received checklist covers the general steps.
Frequently asked questions
Why won't Instagram send a verification code to my email?
Usually the address has a typo, the email went to junk or a tab, or you hit a limit after too many requests. Sometimes Instagram stops a sign-up that looks risky and sends nothing. Check the address, search the mailbox, wait, and try once more.
How long does the Instagram code take to arrive?
Usually under a minute or two. On rented inboxes at OTPGmail, the typical time is about 2 minutes. If nothing has come after several minutes, check junk and the tabs before you request a new code.
My Instagram verification code is not working. Why?
You are probably typing an older code. Each new request can replace the previous one. Use the newest email only, and type the code without spaces.
What does "email not verified" on Instagram mean?
It means you have not confirmed the email on your account yet. Open Accounts Center, go to Personal details, then Contact info, and follow the steps to confirm your email. Menus can differ a little by app version. Check that the address is correct first.
Can a rented inbox get me back into my old Instagram account?
No. Instagram sends codes for an existing account only to the email or phone already on it. Use Forgot password and Instagram's recovery steps instead.
