Instagram Sign-Up with Email Instead of a Phone Number: What to Expect

Yes, you can. On Instagram's sign-up screen you can choose email instead of a phone number, enter any address you can read, add a name, username, password and birthday, and confirm the address with a 6-digit code that Instagram emails to it. A phone number is not required for that step, although Meta can still ask for one once the account exists.

Where the email option is

In the Instagram app or on instagram.com, tap Sign up and choose email rather than phone number. Menus differ slightly between app versions, but the fields are the same: the address, then a name, a username, a password and your birthday.

Two choices are worth making before you start:

What the confirmation email looks like

Instagram sends a short email with a 6-digit code. The subject typically starts with the code itself, followed by "is your Instagram code". The sender's address ends in @mail.instagram.com, and the body says that an Instagram account is being created with this address. Type the six digits on the confirmation screen and the account is active.

Two details catch people out:

If no email shows up at all, Instagram confirmation code not reaching email goes through the causes in order.

What Instagram may still ask for after the email step

Meta rates each new account and can add a check, whichever email provider you used:

What you see What it is What to do
A request for a phone number Meta's risk check on the new account Add your own number; no inbox can complete this step
A request to confirm from another device Device confirmation Approve it on a phone or computer you already use
A captcha A check that you are a person Solve it yourself; OTPGmail does not solve captchas
A request for a video selfie Another of Meta's checks on new accounts Follow Instagram's instructions in the app
"Email not verified" in your settings later The confirmation was not finished Confirm it again in Accounts Center, under Personal details, then Contact info

Apart from the last row, none of these steps goes through email. OTPGmail handles email only: it does not rent phone numbers or receive SMS.

Moving the account to an email you control

If you confirmed the account with an address you will not keep, change it now, not on the day you need a password reset. Instagram sends reset and security emails to the address on the account, and a rented inbox only receives codes within its order window, which the rent page shows before you pay.

  1. Open Accounts Center, then Personal details, then Contact info. Menus can differ a little by app version.
  2. Add the address you control, such as your own Gmail or, for a brand profile, the shared address the brand owns, and complete the confirmation Instagram asks for.
  3. Add your own phone number if you want a second way to recover the account.
  4. Turn on two-factor authentication with an authenticator app, and save the password in a password manager.

Make the change while the rented order can still receive messages, in case Instagram writes to the old address.

If the address for the code is a rented inbox

A rented inbox on OTPGmail is a real @gmail.com or @icloud.com address, and you never sign in to it. The order shows Waiting for code until Instagram's email arrives, then the code appears on the order; click it to copy. In the last 30 days, 89% of Instagram orders received a code, typically after about 2 minutes. If no code arrives within 25 minutes, the order cancels itself with a 100% refund. Extra codes cost nothing within the order period when the service sends more than one; the limit and time window are shown before you rent. Gmail stock for Instagram often runs out early; iCloud is usually in stock when Gmail has run out (switch Inbox type to @icloud.com), and iCloud inboxes are usually cheaper than Gmail, depending on the service. Prices, stock and the rental steps are on the Instagram inbox page.

Keeping the account within Meta's terms

If this is a second profile next to your personal one, Instagram second account: when it needs its own email explains when it can share your existing login instead. Whatever the email, Meta's terms apply to the account: no impersonation, no automated engagement such as scripted follows or likes, and no new account after Instagram has disabled yours. Agencies handling a client brand should use Meta's official business tools. OTPGmail is not responsible for misuse.

Frequently asked questions

Does it matter whether I use Gmail, iCloud or a work address?

Not for Meta's checks: it evaluates every new account for risk, independent of which email address was used. What matters is that you can still read the address later. A work address can be a problem if the company's filter holds automated mail.

Will Instagram send login codes to this email later?

It can. When you sign in on a new device, Instagram may send a similar code to the email on the account. If that address is a rented inbox, the code shows on the same order only within its order window; after that it reaches nobody, which is why moving the account to your own email matters.

Is the blue checkmark part of email verification?

No. The blue badge comes with Meta Verified, a separate paid subscription that checks a government ID. Confirming your email at sign-up only shows that you can read that inbox.

Is there an API service code for Instagram?

Yes: ig. A developer testing a login integration can create an order with POST /v1/orders and the body {"service":"ig"}, add "domain":"icloud.com" for an iCloud inbox, and poll the order for the code. The API docs list every field, and the rent page is the place to start by hand.
