Prime Video Sign-Up With a Separate Email: How It Works

People sign up for Prime Video with a separate email for ordinary reasons: keeping streaming and its marketing out of a main inbox, setting up a TV or a child's tablet, or registering in the country they now live in. Before you do, it helps to know what you are actually creating, because Prime Video has no login of its own. This guide covers the account behind it, when a second account is worth it, and the two different "codes" people run into.

Prime Video is an Amazon account

On primevideo.com, Sign in leads to "Create your Amazon account". What you create there is a full Amazon account, not a streaming-only login. The same email and password can shop on Amazon, and anything Amazon sends about orders, billing or security goes to that address.

That has two consequences:

A second account or the household one?

A separate Amazon account means a separate email, password, billing setup and set of security codes. It also comes with its own limit on how many screens can stream at the same time, a cap that applies to each account however it was created.

Ask what you really need before creating one:

The email code step

Creating the account sends a 6-digit one-time code to the email you entered, in a message titled along the lines of "Verify your new Amazon account". You type it on the sign-up page to finish. Later, signing in on a TV, a phone or a new browser can bring another code to the same address. Codes expire quickly, and there is a resend link; only the newest one counts.

Because each new device can trigger a code, set up every device you plan to use right after creating the account, while you can still read the address. The Amazon email verification guide explains these codes and the checks Amazon adds beyond email in more detail.

Email code or the code on your TV?

"Prime Video sign in with code" often means something else. Many smart TVs show a device code during setup, which you enter on the Prime Video website while signed in on another device. That code is displayed on the screen; it never arrives by email and has nothing to do with the account's inbox.

The email code is the one Amazon sends to the account address when you create the account or sign in on a new device. If a TV is waiting for that code, read it on your phone or computer and type it in promptly, before the TV screen times out.

Keeping the code off your personal inbox

If you want the account's first email step kept off your personal address, a rented inbox can receive the 6-digit code. Pick Prime Video on OTPGmail, rent a real @gmail.com or @icloud.com address and give it to Amazon at sign-up; the code lands on your order page. Price, stock and the rules of the offer are shown on the rent form before you pay. No code within the waiting time (25 minutes at most)? The order cancels itself with a 100% refund. Extra codes cost nothing within the order period when the service sends more than one; the limit and time window are shown before you rent.

A rented inbox only receives codes during the order period, so if the account is meant to last, change its email to one you own under Login & security soon after sign-up. The Prime Video rental page has the step-by-step.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use my existing Amazon account for Prime Video instead?

Yes. Prime Video signs in with an Amazon account, so an account you already have works; a new one is only needed if you want streaming kept separate.

Can I start watching before entering the email code?

No. The account is activated only once you enter the code from the verification email, so keep the sign-up page open until it arrives and use the newest code if you asked for another.

Will Amazon ask for a phone number as well?

Sometimes. Amazon now and then asks a new account for a phone number after the email code. Use your own number for that step; OTPGmail handles email only and does not provide phone numbers.
