DigitalOcean Sign-Up: Email Confirmation and Account Review

DigitalOcean's sign-up looks short: an email, a password and a confirmation email. In practice the email is only the first of several gates; payment and account review come after it, and those depend on you rather than on any inbox. This guide follows the sequence from the registration form to a usable control panel and what each step checks.

The sign-up sequence at a glance

Stage What DigitalOcean asks for Depends on
Registration form Email and password, or a Google or GitHub sign-in You
Email confirmation Opening the link in "Please confirm your email address" The account inbox
Billing A payment method, such as a card or PayPal Your payment details
Review (some accounts) Card verification, sometimes a photo ID DigitalOcean's own checks
Security App-based two-factor authentication in Settings → Security You

Only the second row is about email. Keep that in mind when something goes wrong: a held account or a declined card has nothing to do with which address you used.

Confirming your email address

After you submit the form at cloud.digitalocean.com/registrations/new, DigitalOcean emails "Please confirm your email address". It usually carries a link, and some flows show a verification code instead. Opening the link activates the account and takes you on to billing.

Three details matter:

If the confirmation never shows, check the address you typed, resend once and wait rather than resending repeatedly.

The billing step and account review

Once the email is confirmed, DigitalOcean asks for a payment method. It reviews new accounts closely, so this is the step to prepare for. Use a card in your own name with billing details that match; mismatched information is a common reason for an account to be held for review. Accounts that look unusual to DigitalOcean's own systems may be asked for a photo ID before anything can be deployed.

None of this goes through email. If DigitalOcean declines a card or asks for documents, the answer has to come from your own details and from DigitalOcean's support.

Trial credit: what to expect

New-account credit is granted under DigitalOcean's policy at the time, to accounts it considers eligible. Do not assume every account qualifies. DigitalOcean can withdraw credit from accounts it treats as duplicates of an existing one, so read its current trial terms before you plan a project around the credit. OTPGmail is not a way to claim promotions more than once.

Accounts for clients, classes and CI pipelines

A separate DigitalOcean account is common in three situations: one account per client, so billing and handover stay clean; a lab for Droplets, Kubernetes, App Platform or Managed Databases that you delete afterwards; and test accounts for CI/CD pipelines that use doctl or the DigitalOcean API. Each still goes through payment and review on its own, and each must follow DigitalOcean's Terms of Service, including its rules on payment details and on how many accounts one person may hold.

For a class or workshop, bulk rental for teams gives 1 to 200 inboxes per batch at the same unit price as a single rental, kept for 24 hours; inboxes in a batch that receive no link are not refunded. Pipelines can create single orders through the API with service code dgo, as shown in the Gmail OTP API Python example.

The one step a rented inbox covers

A rented inbox covers the email confirmation row and nothing else. Choose "Sign up with email" on DigitalOcean, rent a real @gmail.com or @icloud.com address, and the link appears on your OTPGmail order page. Over the last 30 days, 76% of DigitalOcean orders received it, with a typical wait of about 2 minutes; if nothing arrives within 25 minutes, the order cancels itself and you get 100% back. Extra codes cost nothing within the order period when the service sends more than one; the limit and time window are shown before you rent. The DigitalOcean rental page has the full rental steps and live stock.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a refund if DigitalOcean declines my card or holds the account?

No. The confirmation link was delivered, so the rental is complete. The automatic refund applies only when no link or code arrives within the waiting time.

Gmail or iCloud for DigitalOcean?

DigitalOcean sends the confirmation to both. iCloud inboxes are usually cheaper than Gmail, depending on the service; right now Gmail is $0.019 (500 VND) and iCloud $0.014 (350 VND) per inbox.

Can I keep an account created with a rented inbox?

Yes, if you move it to an address you control under Settings → Account soon after sign-up. A rented inbox receives codes only during the order period, while invoices, card warnings and login codes keep coming for as long as the account exists.

Can I sign up with Google or GitHub instead?

Those buttons use a Google or GitHub account you can sign in to. A rented inbox has no password, so pair it with "Sign up with email".
