Facebook Account Email: Sign Up Without a Phone, Then Add or Change It

Facebook lets you create an account with an email address instead of a phone number. On the web, the sign-up form has a single field labelled "Mobile number or email", and the app offers the same choice. Type an email there and Facebook confirms the account through that inbox rather than by text message.

The address you type does more than get you past the first screen. It becomes the account's contact for login codes and password resets, so it is worth choosing deliberately. This guide covers what changes with an email sign-up, what Facebook uses the address for afterwards, and how to add or change it later.

What changes when you sign up with an email instead of a phone

Sign up from the browser or phone you use every day, and complete any "Confirm your identity" step with real information. Abandoning it halfway often ends in a locked account rather than a fresh start.

What Facebook uses the account email for afterwards

Once the account exists, the address keeps working in the background:

When What arrives at the address If you can no longer read it
Sign-up The FB-xxxxx confirmation code The account stays unconfirmed
Login from an unfamiliar device or browser A login code That login cannot be finished by email
"Forgot password?" on the login screen A recovery message to the email or phone you choose Recovery depends on another contact on the account

The rule that matters most: for an existing account, Facebook sends codes only to the email or phone already on that account. A new inbox cannot receive them, and nobody can redirect them for you, so ignore anyone who offers to recover a Facebook account for money. The address you sign up with, or the one you replace it with, has to be one you will still read months from now.

Adding or changing the email on your Facebook account

Contact details live in Accounts Center: open Settings, then Accounts Center, then Contact info. Menus can differ slightly between app versions. From there:

  1. Add the email you intend to keep, and your own phone number if you are willing to.
  2. Confirm the new address when Facebook asks; expect a code or a link in that inbox.
  3. Make it the primary contact.
  4. Turn on two-factor authentication with an authenticator app, so future logins do not depend on email alone.

Do this in the first session, while you are still logged in. If the sign-up address stops receiving mail before another contact is on the account, the next login code or password reset has nowhere useful to go.

A separate email, not a second account

Facebook's terms allow one personal account per person, under your real name. A separate address is for keeping your one account apart from your personal inbox, not for opening more accounts. Facebook already has tools for the other needs:

An agency that sets up an account for a client should create it with the client's details, so that the account belongs to the client, and then switch it to the client's own email. If the client signs up on their own device with an address you rented, they do not need an OTPGmail login to read the code. Switch on a share code on your Account page: they enter it together with the email at otpgmail.net/otp to see the codes without an account. Viewing codes there never charges you.

Using a rented address for the confirmation step

A rented real @gmail.com or @icloud.com inbox can take the confirmation step. Over the last 30 days, 79% of Facebook orders on OTPGmail got a code, usually after about 2 minutes. For Facebook, Gmail orders currently get a code noticeably more often than iCloud orders. Your order shows "Waiting for code", then the code next to a "View email" button; with no code after 25 minutes it cancels itself as "Cancelled · refunded". Once a code has arrived, the rental is final even if Facebook asks for more checks later. Extra codes cost nothing within the order period when the service sends more than one; the limit and time window are shown before you rent. Steps are on the Facebook rental page; for a code that never comes, see this checklist.

Frequently asked questions

Can I log in to Facebook with my Gmail address?

Yes, if that Gmail address is the email on the account. You type it on the login screen together with the password you set on Facebook. Your Gmail password plays no part, and Facebook never needs it.

I typed the wrong email at sign-up. What now?

Fix it on the confirmation screen, which lets you change the address or ask Facebook to send the email again. A code sent to the misspelled address is lost, so request a new one once the address is correct.

Is it safe to keep a Facebook account without a phone number?

It works, but recovery then rests on a single inbox. If you forget the password and can no longer read that address, getting back in becomes hard. Adding your own number in Contact info gives you a second route, and Facebook may ask for one anyway if a check is triggered.
