What Telegram Uses Email For: Recovery Email, Login Email and Missing Codes

Telegram uses email for exactly two jobs, and creating an account is not one of them. The first is the recovery email you add when you turn on Two-Step Verification, so a forgotten password can be reset. The second is the login email: on some devices and app versions, Telegram asks for an address at sign-in and sends login codes there instead of by SMS. The code that creates an account always goes to your phone number, or appears in a Telegram app you are already signed into on another device.

That explains most "Telegram never emailed me" searches: people watch an inbox for a sign-up code that email never carries.

Can you sign up for Telegram with only an email address?

No. Telegram treats the phone number as the identity of the account: you create the account with it and use it to log in on a new device. The code for those steps arrives by SMS or inside a Telegram app where you are already signed in. Email is added later, as a second channel for an existing account, and only for the job you added it for.

So if you are waiting in a mailbox for a Telegram registration code, look at your text messages or your other devices instead. No email address can stand in for the phone number, and OTPGmail handles email only: it does not provide phone numbers or receive SMS.

The recovery email in Two-Step Verification

Two-Step Verification adds a password that Telegram asks for on top of the login code. Turn it on under Settings → Privacy and Security → Two-Step Verification. After you set the password, Telegram asks for a recovery email and immediately sends it a confirmation code, usually 6 digits: a code, not a link. Enter it to finish. The code is valid only briefly and can be resent.

The address earns its place months or years later. If you forget that extra password, the reset code goes to this address, so it must be a mailbox you will keep reading. You can change it on the same screen; the new address is confirmed with a code of its own.

The login email: when Telegram asks for an address at sign-in

On some devices, app versions and regions, Telegram adds a step when you log in with your number: it asks you to set a login email and confirm it with a code. From then on the login code goes to that address instead of by SMS, and later logins on new devices may send their codes there too. You can view and change the address under Settings → Privacy and Security.

This flow therefore sends two codes to one address: first the code that confirms the address, then the login code. Telegram sends the second only after you enter the first.

No login email option anywhere? That is normal. Many versions, desktop ones especially, only offer the recovery email. Update the app and look again; if it is still missing, the recovery email is your only email field.

Telegram email code not arriving: what to check

First work out which code you are waiting for, because each has a different answer.

Code you are waiting for Where it actually goes What to do
The code that creates the account SMS, or Telegram on another device Stop checking email
A login code, with a login email set Often Telegram on a signed-in device first, otherwise the login email Check other devices, then that mailbox
Confirmation of a new recovery or login email The address you just typed Check for typos, wait a minute or two, resend once
Reset code for a forgotten Two-Step Verification password The recovery email you confirmed earlier Search that exact mailbox for "Telegram"

Paste the address instead of typing it, since one wrong character or a trailing space sends the code nowhere. Resend only once and always enter the code from the newest message, because older codes expire quickly. In your own mailbox, check the junk folder and any filters. Telegram picks the channel for login codes itself, so no setting guarantees that every code goes to email.

And never forward a Telegram code to anyone.

Which address belongs in each field

If a recovery email "stops working" weeks after setup, first ask whether it is still a mailbox you can open. That is the usual cause.

Using a rented address for a one-off email step

OTPGmail rents real @gmail.com and @icloud.com inboxes for that short-term case. The order row shows "Waiting for code", then the code (click to copy) and "View email" for the full message, with no mailbox login. No code within 25 minutes and the row reads "Cancelled · refunded", with the full price back on your balance. Extra codes cost nothing within the order period when the service sends more than one; the limit and time window are shown before you rent, so check it covers both login-email codes. Price, stock and the rules of the offer are shown on the rent form before you pay; the Telegram rental page has the steps and its live 30-day figures.

Frequently asked questions

Someone messaged me asking for my Telegram code. Is that Telegram support?

No. Telegram's real support never asks for your login or confirmation codes. Whoever asks is trying to get into your account, so do not send it.

The phone with Telegram is in my client's hands. How do they see a code sent to a rented address?

Switch on a share code on your Account page: they enter it together with the email at otpgmail.net/otp to see the codes without an account. Viewing codes there never charges you; renting a cancelled address again through the link works only if you allow it on the Account page, and then it is charged to your balance.

Can I script this while testing my own Telegram client app?

Yes, for your own test account. POST /v1/orders with { "service": "tg" } returns the order with its address, and polling GET /v1/orders/{orderId} shows the code in otp once it arrives. Authentication and error codes are in the API docs.
