TikTok's sign-up leads with a phone number, but it does not require one. Behind "Use phone or email" there is an Email tab, and choosing it means the confirmation arrives as a 6-digit code in an inbox instead of an SMS. This guide follows that route from start to finish: where the tab is, what each screen asks for, how the code behaves when it is slow or rate-limited, and what to add once the account exists so you never depend on a single address.

Can you sign up for TikTok without a phone number?

Yes. In the TikTok app or at tiktok.com/signup, choose "Use phone or email", then open the Email tab. The phone tab sends an SMS; the Email tab sends the code to the address you type. Switch tabs before entering anything, because a code that went out by SMS never reaches an inbox.

Signing up by email is not a promise that TikTok will never mention a phone. It suggests adding one later for recovery, and adding your own is worth doing, as the section on the first session explains.

The email's subject line reads like "123456 is your verification code", so the six digits are in the subject itself; type them straight into the code screen.

When the TikTok code is late, expired or limited

The code expires quickly and TikTok limits how often you can ask for another. Most problems at this step fall into one of these:

Each resend replaces the previous code, so tapping Send code again while an email is on its way only creates a race between two codes. One resend followed by a short wait works better than repeated taps.

The first session: your own email, phone and 2-step verification

Once you have a username, the address you signed up with stays the account's login and recovery contact until you change it. TikTok also sends another 6-digit code to that address when you log in on a new device. In the first session:

Log in on each device you plan to use, while the sign-up address can still receive codes.
Add your own phone number when TikTok suggests it, so recovery keeps working.
In your security settings, turn on 2-step verification.
If the sign-up address is not one you will keep, change the account email in the account settings. Do it early, since TikTok may send a confirmation code to the current address.
